UNPAR.AC.ID, Bandung – The Mathematics Study Program of Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (UNPAR) held the 2024 UNPAR Mathematics Competition (KOMAT) on Saturday, October 5, 2024. This annual competition, which has been running since 2011, serves as a platform for hundreds of junior and senior high school students from various regions across Indonesia to compete.
This year’s KOMAT UNPAR 2024 adopted the theme Candy Crush Saga, inspired by the popular game with no fixed final level, symbolizing the infinite insights and knowledge mathematics provides to those who study it.
With this theme, KOMAT 2024 aims to deepen participants’ interest in mathematics and sharpen their skills, while emphasizing that learning mathematics is a continuous journey that requires dedication and perseverance to achieve great accomplishments.
KOMAT UNPAR 2024 featured a series of engaging activities held both online and offline, meticulously designed by the organizing committee. The first activity was a roadshow aimed at introducing KOMAT UNPAR, UNPAR’s Bachelor’s Program in Mathematics, and mathematics in general to junior and senior high school students across Indonesia.
The roadshow was presented in an engaging format, complete with quizzes and prizes, under the name Roastyshow 2024. The online roadshow took place on Saturday, July 13, 2024, with participation from 56 schools outside Bandung. Meanwhile, offline roadshows were held from July 15 to August 4, 2024, at 14 schools in Bandung, including SMP and SMA Pelita Bangsa, SMPK Yahya, SMPK 4 BPK Penabur Bandung, SMAK 3 BPK Penabur Bandung, SMA Talenta, and SMP and SMA Kuntum Cemerlang.
Participant registration, which opened on the same day as the online roadshow, officially closed on September 1, 2024. The competition garnered significant enthusiasm, with 429 participants registering—a notable increase from the previous year’s 312 participants. This year’s participants comprised 181 junior high school students and 248 senior high school students.
The first round, the qualifying round, was held synchronously online under supervision via Zoom on Saturday, October 5, 2024. The event began with welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Science at UNPAR, Haryanto Mangaratua Siahaan, Ph.D., followed by an opening speech and official launch by the Rector of UNPAR, Prof. Tri Basuki Joewono, Ph.D.
During the qualifying round, both junior and senior high school participants were presented with 50 multiple-choice questions to solve collaboratively on the official KOMAT UNPAR website within 120 minutes. From this stage, 40 junior high school participants and 40 senior high school participants with the highest scores will advance to the semifinal round.
The semifinal round, followed by the final round involving the top 5 participants from each level, will be held offline at UNPAR’s Ciumbuleuit Campus on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
In the semifinal round, participants from both levels will answer 5 essay questions. In the final round, they will solve one problem-solving question and present their solutions before a panel of three judges. (ABI-Humas UNPAR)
