Community Immersion, Kolaborasi Bilateral Tingkatkan Pemahaman Budaya

In 2016, the International Office and Cooperation (CIC) of Parahyangan Catholic University (Unpar) has once again held a Community Immersion program .The program is a form of collaboration between Unpar and the University of Notre Dame Australia. The program which held for the second time took place from November 22 to December 2, 2016.

The Community Immersion Program is an intensive two-week course that combines academic activities and community service as well as a variety of cultural events. The program aims to provide a comprehensive experience for foreign students during their brief study time at Unpar.

During a talk with the Unpar Publication Team, the Head of the CIC Cooperation Division, Ruth Indraswari S.IP., MA, explained that this program is a form of cooperation between the two parties aimed at raising awareness of Indonesian culture for Australian students. The program which is a combination of classroom activities and community engagement is also part of the internationalization of Unpar ( at home ). She hopes this program can provide an opportunity for Unpar students to participate in international programs at Unpar.

“Students from two universities, and the two countries could develop mutual understanding of culture, thought and could become a forum to foster Openness, Tolerance, and Exchange of Values “, she said.

When interviewed separately during the closing ceremony, Georgia, one of the participants, expressed her pleasure to be able to participate in the Community Immersion program for the second time.

” So, I really enjoyed seeing the two programs and seeing the differences and the similarities. But I think both programs have been so enriching for the students who come along. And I think there’s so much to learn from Indonesian culture, Indonesian politics, Indonesian people, Indonesian food. And I feel it’s really valuable for the Australian students come here “, she explained enthusiastically.

A special moment for Georgia, occurred when learning and rehearsing the Saman dance with the Listra team of Unpar. According to this Australian student currently following the semester-based course in the  International Relations Program Study at Unpar, this is the most unforgettable moment.

” Saman dancing is from Aceh but we still perform it on Java. Everything is all about unity in diversity in Indonesia , “he said. “I love Indonesia!”, she concluded enthusiastically when asked to name four words in Bahasa Indonesia.
