Unpar Opens Up the Opportunity for Value and Character Education

Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) as a higher education institution realizes the importance of developing a comprehensive human being. It cannot be denied that education is strongly tied to profound and extensive knowledge that serves as a prerequisite for preparing students to be involved in nation building.  Nonetheless, spiritual and mental management has become urgently needed. Not only due to the nature of education itself which is about building characters and implanting values to a human being, but also the need for special attention.

This is marked by a crisis or erosion of values and leadership without decent character. Technological and scientific advancement threatens the values of humanities and civilization. This value crisis is a short fuse in a high-risk exploding time bomb. An explosion that can destroy social order, disintegrate and deteriorate; progress with unclear utility and benefits; a banal horizontal conflict; and unnecessary actions. Even for individuals, people will suffer from life disorientation. Living prosperously, but still feeling unhappy. Being a Smart and knowledgeable person but not knowing its benefits and utility. Nihilism and uncertainty mark his life.

Value crises go hand–in-hand with character crises. Both rely on each other; the value crisis exists because of the character crisis, and vice versa. The government has long underlined the importance of character building. Unfortunately some higher education institutions believe it to be the task for primary and secondary education. UNPAR believes that intellectual education never ends but then, nor does character education. UNPAR Opens up the possibility and highly prioritizes it in building the values and character side of its students. It is because human beings without basic humanity values cannot be called genuine human beings.

UNPAR is not oriented on just inaugurating students with a high GPA or pretentiously give a diploma paper as if they fulfilled the  graduation requirements, while in reality they have low quality and are mediocre graduates. It is a heavy moral burden when parents entrust their children to study at UNPAR. Higher education is a mixing bowl with an adequate process for an individual to become “insan amil” a (holistic person). First, character education manages someone’s mentality and conscience besides intellectual management.  So it is all about Producing smart, clever and intelligent students on the one hand, and producing better ones on the other.

Other than the curricula in the MKU that teach and educate ethics, logic, and aesthetics, other academic courses should integrally pay attention to the humanities-related process; that is what makes humans humane. Parahyangan Catholic University cares in curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular ways in addition to professionally and seriously handling training sessions aimed at building the character and values of the students. With service learning, serving leadership, the spiritual and emotional quotient methods, in for example various forms of training sessions related to soft skills to equip students. Students are trained to be able to work together, have strong personal motivation, have the ability to handle urgent matters, responsible, highly disciplined, communicative with an attractive personality, elegant and polite in the use of language, creative, critical, well-structured, confident, and moreover, to maintain a high standard of  high integrity.

UNPAR tries to promote, and elucidate for the purpose of comprehension, understanding and internalization as well as integration, even actually practicing these skills in daily life on campus. The campus serves as a laboratory of value education. Values and virtues are not only instilled at the cognitive level, but also realistically applied to affective appreciation. The virtues and values universally well regarded and highly esteemed in society such as; honesty, justice, responsibility, empathy, and appreciation of other pople’s differences and uniqueness are to form the basis of the process of making holistic and genuine human beings humane.
