UNPAR EMERGED VICTORIOUS AT THE 2016 ARCHIGRANDFEST WITH INDONESIAN VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE

Indonesian Vernacular Architecture has slowly been pushed aside by modern architecture. To this day, we as common people as well as Indonesian Architects think that Indonesian Traditional Architecture has no place in the minds foreigners, in other words, it has not been acknowledged. This line of thinking was also followed by most students of architecture. In reality, Indonesian Traditional Architecture has its unique features, especially in the choice and utilization of materials, cultural values as well as its spatial function.

Thus, the Architecture Student Association of BINUS University once again held the 2016 Architecture Grand Festival to challenge future architects/designers to experiment by creating a guest house design as temporary dwellings for tourists as well as permanent dwellings for house owners that are adaptable with the Indonesian climate, weather, as well as environmental conditions.

In the final adjudication by Marchim Sapeta (Kengo Kuma & Associates, Tokyo), Afwina Kamal (Hadiprana), Asfarinal Nanang (Jaringan Pustaka Kota Indonesia), and Yori Antar (Han Awal & Partners) 2 teams representing the architecture study program of Parahyangan Catholic University (Unpar) won the second and third prize in the “International Student House Competition”. Timothy Vittorio, Dennis Cahya Indra, and Aloysius Baskoro with their project called “Ranggen” won the second prize while Rama Dwi Wahyu, Hauzan Irsyad and Erin with their project called “Alor Kelei” won the third prize. In addition another Unpar team won the “Favorite Award Winner” category in the annual competition.

Observing the ideas and designs created by students in the competition has opened our eyes for the need to support and respect Indonesian Vernacular Architecture. We will be able to introduce Indonesian Architecture to the world as well as preserving our cultural heritage and attract interest in Indonesian traditional design.
