The Republic of Indonesia 70th Independence day commemoration ”A Great UNPAR: UNPAR that Liberates”

The Parahyangan Catholic University held a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the Republic of Indonesia’s 70th Independence Day on August 17, 2015 at the campus’s front yard. The ceremony was attended by students, administrative staffs, and educating staffs and all structural positions of Parahyangan Catholic University. The Marching Band accompanying this flag-raising ceremony was from the Training and Education Command of the Indonesian National Army.

The Inspector of the ceremony, Mangadar Situmorang, Ph.D. gave the ceremony speech entitled “A Great UNPAR:UNPAR that Liberates”, “The history of Indonesian independence is that of education history, the fruit of knowledge, result of personal awakening process, collective awakening and the awakening of the life of the people and the nation”. He went further to remind us on the emergence of education figures at the beginning of the national awakening movement. Education made Indonesia realized that independence is a right for all nations.

The establishment of the Parahyangan Catholic University approximately 10 years after the independence day by two prominent figures of catholicism from Bogor and Bandung was an effort to educate the nation, especially the pople of West Java. “Through education, UNPAR has participated in the movement of freedom from folly, poverty, and powerlesness,” .around 54.000 graduates produced by UNPAR is a proof of the sixty years old university contribution to nations progress.

In this flag-raising ceremony the Rector of Parahyangan Catholic University symbolically donate 1563 books from the freshmen to eleven institutions ranging from schools, community, and orphanage. Those books were selected from 18000 books consisting of ensiklopedia, workbook, and picture book. The freshmen compassion toward the eleven institutions is one of the manifestation of UNPAR that liberates in accordance with Spirituality and UNPAR’s basic values (SINDU)
