The 2015 Mathematics National Seminar

The 2015 Mathematics National Seminar themed “The Role of Mathematics in Facing the ASEAN Economic Community” was held on Saturday (19/9). The seminar is a regular event hosted by the Mathematics Study Program of the Faculty of Information Technology and Science. It was held in the Hall of Building 9 of Parahyangan Catholic University and presented 3 resource persons, namely: Prof. Dr. Budi Nurani Ruchjana (the chairman of Indonesian Mathematical Society/IndoMS, Lecturer in Padjadjaran University), Novi Imelda (Chief Investment Officer PT. AIA Financial), and Dr. Judith Felicia Pattiwael (Lecturer in the Management study program of Parahyangan Catholic University).

In addition to the presentations from these three resource persons, there were also 56 panel presentations by those who have previously submitted their papers to the organizing committee. Those 56 papers consist of numerous themes ranging from algebra analysis, applied mathematics, to  mathematics teaching. In this parallel session, a special session for students who wished to present their final paper was also held. “This student event was started around four to five years ago to give an opportunity for students to present their final paper” according to Dr. Julius Dharma Lesmono in his opening remarks as the chairman of the Mathematics Study Program.

According to Dr. Ferry Jaya Permana (Dean of Faculty of Information Technology and Science), mathematics in Indonesia during the seventies could be considered as leading. Many scientists and lecturers from other countries especially Malaysia studied in Indonesia. Nowadays, many Indonesian scientists study in Malaysia. Dr. Ferry Jaya Permana considered the seminar as a good momentum to consolidate the position of mathematics in Indonesia so that it can be more developed. This development is important considering the much fiercer competition that will be faced after the enactment of the ASEAN Economic Community later this year.

Dr. Paulus Sukapto represented the Rector, Mangadar Situmorang, Ph.D, who was unable to come due to his attending the International Network of Universities Seminar in Germany. Dr. Paulus Sukapto conveyed his delight for the hosting of the Mathematics National Seminar. According to him, this event serves as a medium of communication with other universities because the participants came not only from around Bandung but out of Java island, namely: University of Indonesia, Indonesia Education University, Gunadharma University, ITS, ITENAS, Pelita Harapan University, University of Bengkulu, Tanjungpura University, Hasanuddin University, Manado State University, Mahasaraswati University Denpasar, Serang Raya University, IAIN Syekh Nurjati Cirebon, Malang State University, STKIP PGRI West Sumatra, Nusa Cendana University, Cendrawasih University and Parahyangan Catholic University.
