The Masters’ the of Social Science Study Program (PS MIS) is one of the study programs under the auspices of the School of Postgraduate Studies of Parahyangan Catholic University. Having been established and operated since the year 2000, the program is currently accredited B by the National Board of Accreditation for Higher Education (BAN PT), which is valid until 2020.
PS MIS conducts learning processes that are focused on integrating the knowledge and inter-disciplinary competence within the social science group. PS MIS offers a curriculum that will produce graduates as social engineers. A social engineer with integrity, high quality, professionalism, dedication, and high competence in producing research, analyses and solutions for social issues in society. Social issues in a society like Indonesia, in local, national and international scopes require detailed analysis from multiple perspectives of several disciplines, like Development Studies, Policy Studies, Gender Studies, Economics, International Relations, Cultural Studies, Law, Territorial analysis, History, Political science or even Social Psychology.
Graduates of PS MIS will gain competences to be able to become leading social engineers with transformative leadership skills on the basis of integral their character. There is a Joint Degree program between Parahyangan Catholic University and the MBA program of Jiangsu University. The program was initiated in 2013 as a result of cooperation with Jiangsu University. Participants who finish this program will receive two (2) Degrees namely: M.Si (UNPAR) and MBA (Jiangsu University). The program lasts for four semesters with the first semester at UNPAR, the second and third semesters at Jiangsu University and the fourth, back to Parahyangan Catholic University to finish up thesis writing.
Education at PS MIS is not only filled with discussions and lectures, but also covers: guest lectures, community service programs and research. The guest lectures, community service programs and research are compiled during classes. Guest lectures are conducted with distinguished resource persons, like the ambassador of Indonesia for Asia Pacific countries, Jusuf Kalla, businessmen and academics from renowned universities.
The community service program is held annually. In 2013/2014, the emphasis is on the empowerment of Indonesia Migran Worker empowerment fo Taiwan and the Middle-East.
Meanwhile, research projects are lecturers research that involves students of PS MIS. Some notable previous projects are: the role of Indonesian migrant workers in National economics, the analysis of Kredit Usaha Pembibitan Sapi (KUPS) / Cow Seeding Business credit policy. The research projects are financed through the Institute of Research and Community Service of Parahyangan Catholic University (LPPM UNPAR)’s scheme or through Competitive Grants from the Directorate of Higher Education.
National Seminar and Field Visit
Another important activity is the holding of international seminars. The themes of the national seminars are generally related to public policy and administration, business and international relations. The annual national seminars invite nationally and internationally notable speakers. The seminars contain students of PS MIS research result presentations. The latest theme of the seminar was the Worlds’ Maritime Axis: the Golden Bridge of Asia and Africa, hosted in conjunction with the Asia Africa Museum as part of the Asia Africa Conference’s 60th anniversary In Bandung, April 2015.
The field visit comprises an enrichment program that is held to discover and learn about practical aspects of theories gained in the classroom.
Cooperation and Partnership
As a contribution for national interest, PS MIS also receives students from neighbouring countries in Asia and Africa. The students received scholarships from the Indonesian government through the directorate of higher education in the KNB program, finished their Master’s degree in public policy and administration, business, or international relations majors.
In 2015 the PS MIS in conjunction with the Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) hold a Masters program majoring in recovery and empowerment of disaster. PS MIS is eager to create effective and high impact cooperation and partnership. Activities are actively conducted with Wadah Titian Harapan Bangsa foundation, Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), the Asia Africa Conference Museum Bandung, Vietnam National University Hochiminh city, and Jiangsu University.
