Catharina Badra Nawangpalupi

Having been well versed in the art of research since an early age has made the Lecturer and researcher of Parahyangan Catholic University (Unpar) Catharina Badra Nawangpalupi constantly active in numerous research programs especially in the field of entrepreneurship including Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).

Having a parent who was also a lecturer and researcher has made Catharina aware of research activities. “its inherited from my father who was also a researcher, So I was encouraged to become one.” Explained Catharina.

Actually, the lady born in Bandung, December 4, 1973, never dreamt of becoming a researcher. The aspiration to become a career woman had actually been nurtured since early on. But with the passing of time in addition to her interest in sharing knowledge has turned her career choices around.

The meeting with her senior while taking her degree in the Industrial Engineering Department of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), opened up an opportunityfor her to become a lecturer at Unpar in 1997. During her first year as a lecturer, she was heavily involved with research activities, among them was the research into and mentoring of Salak farmers in Yogyakarta.

Her loyalty to research was prompted by personal satisfaction felt when discovering something new. It balances the boredom of repetitious teaching activities that force her to teach basic materials over and all over again to students. “With research, we can find out if something is missing from our teaching, hence the challenge to keep learning,” she then added.

Her choice of career as an academician had pushed her to continue her study. The feeling is mutual with what she currently feels when doing research. These activities demand experience and high competence. “I basically have a principle of lifelong learning, by continuing study I felt challenged again.”

Her choice of continuing study was achieved after taking a Master’s degree in Australia in 2000, three years after she had begun teaching.

At Unpar, she did not stop after obtaining her Masters degree, Catharina also studied in the Netherlands and received her doctoral degree in Australia in 2010.

All the achievements has become a matter of pride for Catharina in her career as an academician. “earning my doctoral degree was full of challenges, when choosing a career as a lecturer, I immediately looked for scholarships. So it has become a milestone,  a point where I developed and became who I wanted,” she added.

IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE

Earning her doctoral degree has pushed her to become more productive in research. All are for the sake of improving knowledge, supporting her career and widening her network for the purpose of making her research beneficial for the general public.

Catharina’s professional side was proven by becoming a Grand Design Consultant at the center of Cooperative and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises of the Ministry of Cooperative and SME from 2013 to 2014.

In addition, she also contributed to Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional/the National Medium-term Development Plan 2014-2019, especially for SME by the ministry of Planning (Bappenas) in December 2013.

The mother of one child is also active in giving training to SMEs and entrepreneurs in various events, susch as becoming an SME Trainer in the Capacity Building Program of the Centre of Exellence in SME Development, Research and Community Service Institute of Unpar in 2012.

Catharina also gave training sessions/courses to trainers of SME Capacity Building, Unpar in 2011.”I think becoming a trainer was a learning process for myself because there were so many paradigms and perspectives from each group. All of these have trained me to see something in a more comprehensive way.

In the field of research, Catharina was involved in Hibah Penelitian Kerjasama Luar Negeri dan Publikasi Internasional/ Overseas Cooperation Research and International Publication of the Indonesian Directorate for Higher education for innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship in the ASEAN Economic Community 2015-2016.

Her devotion as lecturer was awarded as the best lecturer in the category of community service by Asosiasi Perguruan Tinggi Katolik Indonesia/ the Indonesias Catholic University Association award in 2015.

The community service conducted by Catharina are always research-based, with the potential to improve the institution’s capacity through team management that involves fellow lecturers and students.
