The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought forward changes to various aspects of human lives. The world is being saturated by so much information and information is added at a rapid pace. This situation has produced a young generation equipped with sophisticated mastery of ICT and a good ability to sort out information.
An expert in education from the university of Minnesota, John Moravec, stated that the education world is in the Educational paradigm, Education 3.0 which is a learning process highly influenced by the openness of information in addition to ICT sophistication. Learning becomes omni-directional, utilizing various learning resources, it can be conducted anytime anywhere, and is student-centered. These are the main characteristics of Education 3.0.
Wide availability of information and ICT advancement have triggered a surge of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Prominent universities all over the world compete in offering these. MOOCs are open because courses can be accessed by anyone, anywhere and anytime through the internet. They are massive due to their ability to simultaneously cater for a large number of students for every course. MOOCs offers hope that quality education can be accessed easily and cheaply by everyone.
Parahyangan Catholic University is responding to this possibility and challenge by developing the IDE-UNPAR in a form of a full virtual classroom complete with students who may access it. IDE-UNPAR helps lecturer to plan, conduct, monitor, and evaluate learning process. Lesson objectives are transparently available for students as well as the entire learning process for a whole semester. Students can access the learning resources or information about learning resources prepared by lecturers. Students may interact among themselves and the lecturers through chatting/discussion forums, and students can submit their assignments in digital form (text/picture/video). Students activities in IDE-UNPAR can be monitored by the lecturers because they are automatically logged/documented. This is also the case with the evaluation process, IDE-UNPAR provides varieties of facilities to support it.
An effective learning process supported by the existence of IDE-UNPAR demands UNPAR’s lecturers readiness in ICT mastery. Lecturers are systematically and continuously provided with necessary knowledge and skills on teaching methodology and ICT utilization in teaching with the aid from the Learning Innovation Center/Pusat Inovasi Pembelajaran (PIP). IDE-UNPAR can be accessed in http://ide.unpar.ac.id
The existence of IDE-UNPAR also supports the pioneering effort to create MOOCs by UNPAR. In due time UNPAR will not only become a learning place for students on campus but a learning place for society in general. UNPAR can reach out people all over the archipelago and all over the world to dedicate science to the improvement of human dignity in accordance with the motto “Bakuning Hyang Mrih Santjyaya Bhakti”, based on divinity, striving for knowledge to be dedicated to society.
