Five universities in West Java are pioneering Program Profesi Insinyur / Engineer Profession Program (PPI) starting 2016. These five universities are part of 40 universities appointed by the Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti) to pioneer such programs.
The five universities are: the Bandung Institute of Technology, Bogor Agricultural University, Parahyangan Catholic University and Bandung Islamic University. Other universities currently pioneering a similar program are: Gadjah Mada University, Sepuluh November Institute of Technology, and Lampung University.
The Minister of Research Technology and Higher Education, Mohammad Nasir stated that the Engineer Profession Program is being pioneered as an effort to fulfill the national need for high quality engineers. The program can be followed by Bachelors of Engineering or Bachelors of Applied Engineering. They are generally fresh graduates or those with insufficient engineering practical experience.
This program can also be followed by Bachelors of Science and Bachelors of Engineering Education who meet the bridging requirement. “Hopefully this program can yield engineering resources that are capable of solving scientific and technological problems by providing added-value and utility for the society,” he then added.
The Choice of appointing 40 universities to pioneer the Engineer Profession Program was based on the university classification and rank as well as the rough estimate of university students in every province. “in addition to the universities having Engineering Study Programs, we also take into account the proportion of private and state universities, distribution in Java, Sumatra and the eastern part of Indonesia with the number of citizens, up to prioritizing universities with maritime related engineering,” he added.
The Masela Block
We know that the Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education has to play a role in preparing the necessary human resources to support the long-term development plan of the Masela Block. The development gas processing refinery at the Masela Block, Maluku (de Moluccas) is projected to be finished in 2024. The long-term infrastructure development is also calculated to spark the birth of downstream businesses with the operation of the Masela Block.
Therefore, according to Natsir, preparing experts beginning from high quality graduates is extremely crucial in supporting such development projects. Based on the regulation from the Kemenristek Dikti, universities holding the PPI should also prepare the operating system for the program. In addition, they should cooperate with the related ministry and/or the Indonesian Engineer Association or other Engineering Expertise associations accredited by PII.
The Director General of Higher Education Institutions, Kemenristek Dikti, Patdono Suwignjo said that the curriculum of the Engineer Profession Program Study Program is a learning system that emphasizes the execution of engineering profession activities. “The Credit Semester System consists of 24 credits with 70% field practice and a maximum of 30% class meeting,” he then added. The duration of learning is between 1 to 2 semesters. (Siska Nirmala)
