Two Indonesian Heroines Hoisted “Merah Putih” Flag at Antartic Summit

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Two Indonesian female climbers managed to raise the Indonesian flag on the summit of Mount Vinson Massif, Antarctica. They are Frances Dimitri Inkiriwang (23) and Mathilda Dwi Lestari (23) who are members of The Women of Indonesia’s Seven Summits Expedition Mahitala-UNPAR (WISSEMU) Team.

Unpar’s Mahitala press release announced that the team managed to hoist the “Merah Putih” Flag on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017 at 23:48 local time Thursday, or January 5th, 2017 at 9:48 pm Western Indonesia Time. The news of Mahitala Unpar team’s success came from one of the climbers in the WISSEMU team, Mathilda Dwi Lestari who provided the news from High Camp via satellite phone at 12:38 pm that day.

“The success of raising the flag at the highest peak of Antarctica is a tribute to the unity of the Indonesian nation,” according to Mathilda in a press release received by KompasTravel .

The women’s climber team started the journey to climb Mount Vinson Massif on January 1, 2017. The total journey until the team reached the top of Vinson Massif took four days.

The Team stopped and rested at Low Camp at an altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level (masl). The team then went on acclimatizing as well as bringing some baggage to the High Camp (3,770 meters above sea level) the next day.

Mahitala Unpar called the journey to High camp “is far from easy”. Temperatures during the journey reached -30 ° C with heavy snow. Located at 1020 meters elevation and a terrain slope angle of 45 degrees, the team had to use the aid of fixed ropes (safety rope during the ascent) to be able to reach the High Camp point.

The journey to the top of the High Camp point was accompanied by sunny weather. However the strong wind and extreme cold, with temperatures reaching -33 ° C, which made the cold really sting.

With this success, the WISSEMU team has been noted as the first two Indonesian women to set foot on the summit of Mount Vinson Massif.

The Rector of Parahyangan Catholic University, Mangadar Situmorang congratulated the WISSEMU team.

“Congratulations, (I’m) very proud and grateful, I would like to thank the various parties that helped and prayed. Thank you for making Unpar’s and Indonesia’s dreams come true. especially to prove the pioneering and fighting spirit of  Indonesian women, “he added.

The Mount Vinson Massif with an altitude of 4,892 meters above sea level is one of the highest mountains in the top seven continental plates. The highest mountains on the other continents, among others are Kilimanjaro, Everest, Elbrus, Carstensz, Aconcagua and Denali.
